Re: Dr. Michael Balin / TLC Albany

I had Lasik done 2 years ago. I chickened out the first time, then finally decided to do it. I needed distance vision and the glasses were so strong I couldn't see normally--looking back, I would have kept my regular glasses and then got driving glasses.

I have no hesitation about recommending Dr. Belin--he is a board certified, extremely competent surgeon.(I believe he has moved recently to Arizona--not in Albany anymore) However, I don't think the effects of this are explained enough--the video just doesn't work for me!

I would give anything to remember how my eyes felt before the surgery--they wouldn't feel like they have sandpaper in them. I keep eyedrop companies in business. I developed blufferitis, a dry eye syndrome that requires constant attention (soaking eyes with warm water, wash with baby shampoo etc)  I am an adult, no one forced me to do this! However, I would not tell people to have lasik, esp if they are age 50 or older like I am. My eyelashes have all but disappeared, can't wear makeup, my lids always look red, the kids in school think I am crying half the time. It is hard enough to get old without looking worse than you have to! So really look carefully at this and remember--it is not that much of a pain to have to keep extra glasses around. My eyes are changing already (normal as you age) and I will probably need glasses soon ( never as strong as the ones I used to have).

I think there is some greed involved in doctors wanting to do this procedure--I think if they had really cared about me they might have said I was not a good candidate for this, even with all the testing. Not alot of studies (if any) have been done on older people getting lasik. So be careful--I can only hope as I get older all will be ok with my eyes. I think this surgery has made me look older, which is sad for me. Good luck with your decision--I never minded wearing glasses--maybe it is time for the eyeglass companies to figure something else out!
